Partnership Responsibilities for Co-operative Education at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV

The co-op partnership involves students, employers, and ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV working together for enrichment of learning in the classroom and the workplace. Upon joining the co-op program, each student acknowledges their responsibility towards the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Co- operative Education Program, co-op employers and other students.

The Student

ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • adheres to relevant co-op program requirements
  • maintains good academic standing within the university
  • completes at least three co-op work terms for their program
  • completes the academic requirements of their major program as a full-time student

WORK TERM RESPONSIBILITIES

Prior to a work term:

  • successfully completes co-op curricular requirements which must include, workshops, and one-on-one consultations with co-op career advisors and coordinators
  • actively participates in the co-op job search process
  • upon securing a co-op work term, registers in the appropriate co-op practicum course
  • pays tuition and applicable student fees for each work term as stated in the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Calendar
  • honours the acceptance of co-op employment as a contractual agreement with the employer
  • obtains valid work permits, insurance and other relevant documentation

During a work term:

  • creates learning objectives for each work term
  • participates as an ambassador of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV and ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Co-op by striving to be a productive, motivated and responsible employee
  • is normally responsible for all moving and living costs associated with the work term (more information is available under Job Search
  • respects the employer’s policies and confidentiality
  • adheres to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Co-op guidelines and procedures outlined in The Co-op Guide
  • participates in the site visit and in the employer evaluation process
  • submits a co-op work term report or project, in addition to all other required documents by the designated deadline for each work term

The Employer

  • provides safe, relevant, paid employment to the co-op student for the duration of the employment period
  • hires the co-op student as an employee
  • maintains general liability coverage including worker’s compensation appropriate to the employer's operations and in accordance with the government regulations for the region, province or country of employment
  • follows all jurisdictional employment regulations and laws, as well as all health and safety regulations
  • determines the salary, start and end dates, employment status, and vacation pay
  • orients the student to the workplace and introduces the student to the specific tasks of the job
  • discusses the student's learning objectives at the start of the work term
  • provides supervision, training and ongoing feedback to the student throughout the term; participates in a mid-term evaluation of the student during the coordinator's visit
  • provides technical guidance on the student's work term project or report where appropriate
  • completes the supervisor evaluation form of the student’s performance at the conclusion of the work term

The Co-op Program

GENERAL

  • develops and delivers a Co-operative Education curriculum that meets national accreditation standards in the field of Co-operative Education
  • develops and delivers education programs and services for co-op students
  • develops work term opportunities reflective of the academic programs and student needs
  • assesses work term opportunities to ensure appropriate learning environments
  • coordinates job postings, employer/student interviews, job offers and acceptance
  • liaises with employers, students, and faculty
  • assists students with their educational, career, and personal development

DURING THE WORK TERM

  • communicates to the employers and students the components for a successful work term
  • monitors student learning progress and the quality of the work experience
  • conducts mid-term review of the co-op work terms with employers and students
  • facilitates, as required, the resolution of problems arising during the work term
  • reviews work term reports and evaluation forms, and assign appropriate grades

The University

  • financially supports the costs of administering ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Co-op
  • provides access to university services for those students engaged in co-op
  • encourages faculty to participate in relevant aspects of co-op
