Julie Clement
Julie Clement, BA, JD, was introduced to plain language when she enrolled in law school (a mid-life crisis decision). She later spent 20 years as a professor, teaching law students to draft legal documents in plain language. She is now the deputy clerk of the Michigan Supreme Court, but spends much of her free time as a leader in the plain language field.
Julie is the president of Clarity, Inc., an international organization that promotes plain legal language and design. She was editor in chief of The Clarity Journal for 16 years and is on the boards of the Center for Plain Language and the International Plain Language Federation. She helped draft the first international plain language standard, ISO 24495-1 (an important part of this certificate program). And she is the project manager for Part 2 of that standard, which will provide guidelines for plain language legal communications.
In her free time, she enjoys travelling, quilting, spoiling her grandchildren, and occasionally performing music with her husband. They live in Portland, Michigan.
