Professional Ethics in Vocational Rehabilitation

Individuals and organizations in vocational rehabilitation and disability management are guided by principles and standards of conduct. In this course, you’ll learn about the professional standards and best practices of the profession and examine the ethical, legal, and professional issues involved. You’ll become familiar with ethical decision-making models and core ethical issues including informed consent, confidentiality, professional competence, professional relationships and organizational business culture. You’ll also examine the application of a professional code of ethics specific to areas of practice and diverse populations.

What you will learn

After completing this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Explain philosophical, ethical and legal foundations of professional practices
  • Recognize ethical dilemmas to identify moral values, ethical principles, and legal standards relevant to such dilemmas
  • Apply appropriate ethical decision-making models to enhance individual judgement and ethical resolve
  • Integrate ethical principles, standards and guidelines for working with diverse populations
  • Identify issues for vocational rehabilitation practices including professional competence, informed consent, confidentiality, professional relationships, advocacy, technology and specialized practices
  • Assess how organizational culture impacts the ethical climate of an organization and its disability management practices
  • Understand the implications of technology on administrative and professional practices

How you will learn and be evaluated

  • Prepare to spend 6–10 hours per week on coursework
  • Expect reading and other assignments on a weekly basis
  • Plan to access the course at least once every few days to keep up with your work and class discussions
  • Connect with the instructor via email, online posts, and optional live Q&A Zoom sessions scheduled by the instructor (summaries/recordings available)

You will be evaluated on:

  • Assignments (individual and group)
  • Participation in online discussions and case scenarios 

You will be evaluated on a Pass/Fail basis (minimum average grade of 75% required to pass).
