Mental Health in Disability Management
Mental health issues present some of the most challenging and complex problems for organizations and disability management professionals. They are the fastest-growing cause of absence from work and generate the highest costs and durations of disability. In this course, you will focus on the organization's role in mental health. You’ll learn how the workplace can improve mental health outcomes—including improving success with mental health related return to work (RTW). Explore the personal and organizational consequences of poor mental health and consider options for prevention. You will also discuss how to assist workers who have mental health barriers navigate the various systems to make a safe and timely return to work.

What you will learn
After completing this course, you’ll be able to do the following:
- Identify common mental health issues and the impact on the individual and society
- Respond to the unique challenges of addressing workplace mental health impairments, such as treatment limitations, stigma and increased costs
- Assess gaps between mental health needs and supports for an organization and individual clients
- Recommend policies and approaches that improve mental health outcomes for the individual and the organization
- Remediate processes that impede mental health and wellness through stakeholder collaboration
- Design an effective return-to-work plan for mental health conditions
How you will learn and be evaluated
- Prepare to spend 6–10 hours per week on coursework
- Expect reading and other assignments on a weekly basis
- Plan to access the course at least once every few days to keep up with your work and class discussions
- Connect with the instructor via email, online posts, and optional live Q&A Zoom sessions scheduled by the instructor (summaries/recordings available)
You will be evaluated on:
- Assignments (individual and group)
- Participation in online discussions and case scenarios
You will be evaluated on a Pass/Fail basis (minimum average grade of 75% required to pass).
