The Business of Writing

The final course in The Writer’s Studio focuses on the journey from manuscript to book, helping you think through the many choices you’ll have to make as you prepare to publish your work. You’ll reflect on the legal and ethical implications of your project, explore strategies for thinking about your manuscript as a whole, and gather techniques for editing longer works. You’ll also look at the publication process, including how to position your work, research the publishing market, and query potential agents and publishers.

What you will learn

After completing this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Identify potential legal issues when creating your own work and/or editing the work of others 
  • Articulate an ethical code for your writing
  • Think about, and make editorial decisions for, your manuscript as a whole
  • Navigate the publishing process with confidence

  • Reading online modules
  • Participating in online discussions
  • Completing assignments
  • Attending live lectures
  • Participating in the production of an annual anthology

You will be evaluated using a Pass/Fail grading scale.
