Strategic Communication and Working Alliances
This course will help you build the alliances you need with clients, employers, unions, professionals and community stakeholders, with the goal of integrating people with disabilities into the workplace.
We’ll emphasize the role of effective strategic communication, partnership and collaboration in working with individuals, groups and organizations, including diverse populations. You'll explore the key elements of rehabilitation practices, including self-evaluation, developing sound assessment and interviewing skills, working with resistant or difficult individuals and navigating typical organizational and environmental challenges.
You will also be exposed to a variety of client populations and settings in order to develop appropriate interventions and approaches for different situations. You'll also learn to assist employers in identifying and developing workplace accommodations and supports for workers with disabilities.
Courses will be available for individual registration until April 2023 only. After that time, all seats will be reserved for diploma students.

What you will learn
After completing this course, you’ll be able to do the following:
- Understand a variety of perspectives in order to anticipate, assess and address concerns associated with disabilities in the workforce
- Use relevant research literature to dispel myths associated with workers with disabilities
- Develop a business case for including people with disabilities in the workplace
- Understand the role of rehabilitation practitioners in developing and retaining employees with disabilities
- Recognize the attitudes, skills and knowledge necessary to support partnerships, including effective communication skills
- Balance the rehabilitation professional's ethical responsibility to the worker with the disability, the employer, the feepayer and the requirement for societal advocacy
- Access the resources and supports needed to accommodate workers with disabilities
- Understand the workings of negotiation conflict resolution
How you will learn and be evaluated
- Expect lectures, role-playing and group discussions
- Attend all 21 hours of classes (mandatory)
- Prepare to participate in discussions, review all handouts and complete the homework assignment
You will be evaluated on:
- Individual and group exercises
- Final written assignment
