Evaluation, Leadership and Learning

In order to successfully tackle tough issues, leaders must be evaluators, and evaluators must be leaders. In this course, you’ll examine the differences between traditional and adaptive approaches to leadership and evaluation and learning. You’ll explore key concepts including how to more fully manifest leadership behaviours and practices that encourage experimentation, curiosity, critical thinking, reflective practice and a collaborative learning environment in your professional and personal contexts.

What you will learn

After completing this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Enhance and integrate evaluative thinking and reflective practice to your context
  • Identify what you, as an individual, are bringing to the evaluation dimensions of your work
  • Apply evaluative thinking and reflective practice to your context
  • Apply six key thematic concepts of the course in your context (eg. characteristics of developmental evaluation, transformative leadership, navigating complex systems, learning as accountability, building learning organizations, models for a community of practice)
  • Identify your situational leadership, responsiveness to emergence in your context and pathways for improvement
  • Describe and apply a select number of practices and methods to strengthen leadership, evaluative thinking and reflective practice in your context—including strategic learning questions, having courageous conversations and appreciative interviews

How you will learn and be evaluated

  • Prepare to spend about 10 hours per week on coursework
  • Plan for advance reading
  • Expect reading and other assignments on a weekly basis
  • Plan to access the course at least once every few days to keep up with your work and group exercises

You will be evaluated on:

  • Class participation
  • In-class assignments
  • Post-class reflection assignment
