Practicum 1

Under the supervision of the instructor and supervisor, you will spend three weeks unpaid in an employment program - some examples are such as a WorkBC centre, a specialized program such as those for newcomers or youth, or a post-secondary career centre. This is your opportunity to observe and job shadow, as well as see how concepts, tools and approaches learned in class may be applied to client engagement and support. You will also keep a journal to practice critical-thinking skills and reflect on your experience and learning. This practicum will help further develop your professional identity as you learn from a wide variety of career practitioners and observe the broad array of job roles in the career services field.

NOTE: You must be a resident of B.C. and legally entitled to work in Canada in order to complete the practicum.

Spring 2024 update: Practicum experience is a key component of the program, and we are working with practicum employers on how best to support our students and their practicums. Please note:

  • Practicum is B.C.-based. We are unable to accept applicants who reside outside the province of B.C.
  • Practicum employers work with vulnerable populations and require students to have the following:
    • Recent criminal record check (CRC)
    • Proof of full vaccination: Our practicum organizations follow Provincial Health Orders and may at times require proof of COVID-19 vaccination as part of their employment/practicum terms and conditions.

Any costs associated with the above requirements are the responsibility of the student.
