Personal Leadership and Identity

What does your personal history bring to your leadership? In this course, you’ll learn about your connection to the land and the histories that have brought us together. You’ll build relationships within and across communities, as you explore identities, learn about human rights, and look at how power and privilege impact relationships. Guided by Indigenous ways of knowing, you’ll bring forward the teachings from our ancestors, explore ways to support healing and balance in your work, and learn to become a more effective community leader.

  • Examine ways to heal while staying connected and balanced within community
  • Differentiate human rights from power or privilege, and describe the impacts of these systems
  • Build and strengthen relationships within and across communities
  • Describe how your personal leadership style is influenced by your experiences, goals, values, and identities

How you will learn and be evaluated

  • Classes will include exercises, discussions, reflections and guest facilitators.
  • In both class content and format, we aim to decolonize our approaches to community learning, by breaking down the systems we are challenging, and by building true relationships as the core of everything we do.
  • We will share resources for you to read, listen to, and explore. We will let you know whether a resource is required/recommended, or for enrichment or deeper learning.
  • In our learning community, you will also have the opportunity to share resources with one another. Wherever possible, we will provide options for accessing each text, share tools for accessibility, and build in time to discuss what we’ve learned in the resources.
  • The Community Capacity Building Certificate is a Pass or Fail curriculum. Passing the program and receiving the certificate is determined based on attendance, participation, and the presentation on your community project.
