Editing student wins Editors Canada annual scholarship
Editors Canada, Canadas national editorial association, has awarded its 2024 Claudette Upton Scholarship to Helena Ramsaroop, a student in our Editing Certificate program.
The scholarship is an annual award that recognizes a promising emerging editor. The announcement of Ramsaroops win was made during Editors Canadas conference in late June, hosted at 間眅埶AVs Vancouver campus. The scholarship selection panel commended Ramsaraoop for her thoughtful, articulate reflection on the value of empathy within editing.
In her scholarship essay, Ramsaroop noted, Editors can encourage writers to handle sensitive topics with care, honesty, and respect, and to hold space for perspectives that differ from their own.
Ramsaroop recently completed the certificate program and plans to launch a freelance editorial business that will focus on supporting and promoting BIPOC and other marginalized writers.
While orginally intent on a career in academia, Ramsaroop decided to switch to editing after taking our introductory editing course.
After years of feeling lost, I finally found a new career that felt like the perfect fit, she told Editors Canada. I completed the final course [in April 2024], and Im happy to say that editing still feels right for me and Im excited to begin my career.
