Human and animal faces are often part of traditional Northwest Coast design. Some are quite realistic, as on this drawing and this painted skin 'poncho' (see below, left and middle). Whereas, others faces are more stylized (see below, right).
Many chests have profile faces (see left) on the left and right sides of the main panel. This type of corner box design can create an easily recognizable face (as shown to the right).
The images above and below depict the front and back of two different boxes. Compare the different face forms used on each box.
Some boxes and dishes have abstracted faces. The faces on the sides of this dish are upside down, while the ends are right side up (see below). Can you tell what is depicted? Are they animal forms or human?
